La Hejmreveno

1

En tre sombran mian vivon
brilis dolĉa fefigur';
tiu dolĉa bild' paliĝis,
nun min kovras noktobskur'.

Se l' infanoj en mallumo
sentas premon de anim',
ili kantas laŭtan kanton,
por sin savi de la tim'.

Mi, infano fola, kantas
en mallum' de mia kor'—
eĉ se l' kanto ne tro ravas,
ĝi min savis de l'angor'.

The Homecoming

1

In my life so dark and jaded,
Once a vision glistened bright.
Now the vision's dim and faded—
Once again I'm wrapped in night.

In the dark a child, dissembling
While the fearsome phantoms throng,
Tries to cover up his trembling
With a shrill and noisy song.

I, a frantic child, am straining
At my song in darkness here.
What if the song's not entertaining?
Still it's freed me of my fear.
