Prayer to Life

Macedonio Fernández

To Elena de Obieta

Luminous tide of Life,
ebb and flow of being,
swelling now
with sighs of joy or pain
the bosom of a century,
you have lifted our frail hearts
to the crest of a dream
about to break for us
against a shore unknown.
Take from us, if you will,
all chalices save one:
the brimming cup of love
be all our dole.
Let our two hearts,
lulled by the rhythmic lie of time,
forever dream as one,
borne by a single dream
to the shore of a single sigh.
         Amen.
