Sunday, January 18, 1987, 1:15-3:00 pm, Baha'i Center, 5713 16th Street, N.W., Washington, DC: General meeting of the Esperanto Society of Washington.  Program: (1) outreach, public relations, publicity, lectures and other activities aimed at the general public for 1987, (2) activities for the 1987 ELNA Congress in Washington, (3) questionnaire results: members' interests and future programs, (4) introduction to Esperanto literature and distribution of a bibliographical guide to Esperanto literary history and criticism.

ATTENTION!  PAY DUES IMMEDIATELY!  To those who have not yet paid: we need your tiny contribution of $5 (more if you can afford it) just to cover the  expenses of the newsletter (reproduction and postage).  The size and frequency of our newsletters as well as the scope of our activities depend upon our fiscal health.  YOUR DUES MUST BE PAID BY FEBRUARY 7 OR YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE MAILING LIST!  So fill out the form on page 4 and send it with your check to Phil Chenoweth.

LINGUISTICS COURSE:  Roberto Passos Nogueira, a sometime Esperanto poet represented in Esperanta Antologio, has just moved to Washington from Brazil and has kindly volunteered to teach a mini-course on weekends about Esperanto and Linguistics, if there is a demand for it.  Please contact David Gaines to express your interest.

 

COMPUTER SURVEY: If you have regular access to any type of computer, please send a postcard in the mail to Ralph Dumain indicating the type of computer(s) you use, the software you use (especially word processing (can you can produce the accented letters?), database management, and communications), and your modem if you have one (very important!).

 

1987 ELNA CONGRESS:  At our last general meeting, Dr. Lieberman delineated the respective responsibilities of ELNA and Washingtonian Esperantists.  Washingtonians are requested to help with hosting the conference (including the Esperanto exhibit at Georgetown University) and arranging excursions.  ELNA itself is responsible for program content, but our ideas are welcome.  Please submit your suggestions to Ralph Dumain or bring them up at the general meeting.

THE ECONOMICS OF LANGUAGE USE:  Anyone who attended this conference sponsored by the Universala Esperanto-Asocio, Friday, December 12, 1986, at the U.N. Plaza, New York, please come to the next meeting to tell us about it or write up a report for the newsletter.

 

PUBLIC RELATIONS ACTIVITIES:  The three media events described below resulted in numerous inquiries to John Dale and David Gaines.  David was even invited to be interviewed for the Greater Washington Guide.  This demonstrates the benefits of well-executed public relations.  Articles about Esperanto are appearing constantly in the press these days.  We need to inform and advertise constantly!  Letters to the editor, speeches, press releases, etc. are very effective!  Your ideas are welcome.  If you belong to professional or other organizations that would be interested in hearing about various facets of Esperanto, let us know.  Talk to your friends and acquaintances.  Let's do it in 1987 for Esperanto's 100th birthday!

 

 

INTERESOJ DE MEMBROJ / MEMBERS' INTERESTS

 

In addition to the checklist I provided, members expressed interest in the performance of skits, a choir, genealogy, senkrokodila semajnfino, news about the Esperanto movement, geography, history of logic, and humor.  Members volunteered to do programs on philosophy, computers, libraries, documentation, and bibliography, music, linguistics, psychotherapy, and vegetarianism.

OKAZAĴOJ DUM DECEMBRO 1986 / EVENTS OF DECEMBER 1986

 

Dimanĉon, la 14-an de decembro:  Ĝenerala kunveno de la Esperanto-Societo de Vaŝingtono.  Ni kunvenis ĉe la Baha'i Center, manĝetis, babiladis iomete, faris kelkajn anoncojn, kaj diskutis gravajn organizajn demandojn kaj planojn.  Oni prezentis la novan estraron kaj petis la helpon kaj partoprenadon de la membroj.  Ni diskutis kaj per voĉdono akceptis la novan regularon de la societo.  D-ro Lieberman informis nin pri la venonta ELNA-Kongreso en julio 1987 ĉe Georgetown University kaj specifigis la devojn de ELNA kaj ESV.

 

Dimanĉon, la 14-an de decembro:  Zamenhof-Bankedo de la Esperanto-Klubo de Baltimore.  La Baltimoranoj kaj ok membroj el la Vaŝingtona societo kunvenis ĉe la Golden China Restaurant por ĝua manĝegado, babilado, kaj festsalutoj.

 

Vendredon, la 19-an de decembro, oni intervjuis David Gaines je WAMU-FM radiostacio en Vaŝingtono.  La programsegmento je la 6-a matene daŭris 5 minutojn sed multaj aŭskultis kaj la reago estis tre favora.  [raporto de David Gaines]

 

Vendredon, la 19-an de decembro, okazis festeto kaj ĵurnalista akcepto por D-ro Humphrey Tonkin, Prezidanto de la Universala Esperanto-Asocio, ĉe la Dupont Plaza Hotel en Vaŝingtono.  Membroj de la universitataj kaj lingvoinstruaj komunumoj estis invititaj.  Ankaŭ ĉeestis ĵurnalisto kaj fotografisto de la Washington Post, kaj artikolo pri la afero, kun foto, aperis en tiu gazeto la sekvantan tagon [vidu bibliografion sube].  Ni gajnis novan membron el la festeto.  Per la afero mem kaj niaj porgazetaraj elsendajoj, ĉiuj lingvaj lernejoj kaj universitataj lingvaj fakoj nun konscias pri la Esperanto-movado en Vaŝingtono.  [raporto de David Gaines]

 

Dimanĉon, la 28-an de decembro:  Zamenhof-Bankedo de la Esperanto-Societo de Vaŝingtono.  La manĝaĵo kaj la kelnerado ĉe Chevy Chase Holiday Inn aĉegis, sed la Esperantista etoso kompensis.  Ni feliĉas, ke multaj personoj el la regionoj de Baltimore kaj Richmond partoprenis.  Ni ĝojis ankaŭ pro la ĉeesto de nia honora dumviva membro Alfonso Correa kaj lia edzino, Kathy.  Ni ankaŭ ĝuis surprizan alvenon de brazila Esperantisto kaj iama poeto Roberto Passos Nogueira, kiu ĵus alvenis Vaŝingtonon por ekloĝi kaj labori dum kelkaj jaroj.  Entute estis proksimume 30 partoprenantoj.  En la bankeda ĉambro estis ekspozicio de Esperantaj libroj kaj revuoj kaj fotoj de la Universala Kongreso en Pekino, Ĉinio en 1986.  Ni multe ĝuis la konversaciadon kaj kamaradecon.  Prezidanto David Gaines estris la

programon.  D-ro Nogueira spontane parolis pri la gastigemo kaj helpemo de la Esperantistoj.  Vicprezidanto Tom Storck tostis la memoron de Zamenhof.  Humphrey Tonkin ne povis ĉeesti por fari la ĉefparoladon, do anstataŭuis lin Charles Power, multjara aktivulo, estrarano de ELNA, kaj novalveninto en nia regiono.  S-ro Power regalis nin per amuza kaj lertstila prelego pri la evoluo de la homaro kaj la neceso de komuna lingvo por akceli tiun evoluon.  Salutis ĉiun Tom Goodman kiel reprezentanto de la grupo el Baltimore.  Baltimorano Paŭlo Smith legis originalan poemon.  Fine, David Gaines kaj Charles Donoghue gvidis muzikon kaj kolektivan kantadon de kvar Esperantaj kantoj, inkluzive la fifaman "La Espero," por kiu David sonbendigis sintezitan muzikon. 

 

 

 

Lundon, la 29-an de decembro:  John Dale, Gail Martin, Ian Heiman (studento de Gail Martin), kaj David Gaines partoprenis televidprogramon "Panorama" je stacio 5, WTTG.  Oni diskutis la uzadon de Esperanto en la lernejoj.  Ni ricevis favorajn komentojn kaj esprimojn de intereso.  [raporto de David Gaines]
